The first-gen Universal guns used surplus GI parts, and were pretty well standardized with military M1 Carbines. The later ones, though, differed greatly in parts and quality. USGI parts won't fit, and they're lower quality overall.

Some were marked and some were unmarked. There were so many of them sold surplus that they used to be cut off to make 5 round hunting magazines, third locking bump and hold open follower included. The transition in production between second generation and third generation is somewhere between 176xxx and 187xxx.
